Overview

Central Kashmir's quiet meadow

Yusmarg is one of Budgam's most peaceful mountain destinations, surrounded by broad green meadows, dense forest, snow-covered mountains, and flowing streams. Local belief gives the name the meaning “Meadow of Jesus,” linking the region with a visit by Jesus Christ.

At about 2,400 metres, it has spring flowers, summer grass, and snowy winter scenery. It is also a base for trails toward Doodhpathri, Sang-e-Safed, and high-altitude lakes — a hidden Kashmir escape for nature, family time, photography, and trekking.

History

Yusmarg has long served shepherd communities as grazing land. In the British period, pleasant climate and scenery made it a retreat, later developing into tourism while retaining a quieter, less-commercial character.

Its meadows, streams, forest, villages, and mountain life remain part of Central Kashmir's natural and cultural heritage.
