Overview

The spring where the Jhelum begins

At the Pir Panjal foothills in Anantnag, Verinag is a beautiful natural destination famous for its clear spring, Mughal architecture, and peaceful surroundings. It is the source of the Jhelum River and an important historical and cultural landmark.

The name comes from Sanskrit “Virah” and the local spring name. Jahangir built the celebrated octagonal stone basin around the natural spring in the 17th century. Pine forests, mountains, and maintained gardens frame its blue water and create a fine blend of nature, history, and Mughal heritage.

History

Jahangir was deeply impressed by Verinag and developed it as a royal retreat in the 17th century, creating the octagonal spring structure and Persian-style Mughal garden. He considered Kashmir among the world's most beautiful places and had a special attachment to this site.

Mughal rulers used it as a resting place during Kashmir visits. For centuries its waters, historic structure, and quiet surroundings have remained a defining natural and cultural landmark.
