Overview
Kashmir's brief season of colour
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden overlooks Dal Lake from the Zabarwan foothills. Its large, ordered flower beds and mountains form one of Jammu & Kashmir's most celebrated spring scenes.
Previously called Model Floriculture Centre, the garden displays millions of tulips in varied colour and has become a major spring attraction for visitors from India and abroad. Unlike regular gardens, its famed tulip show lasts only a short period each year.
Seasonal nature & history
Tulips typically bloom in March–April, with opening based on temperature, winter snow, growth, and weather. Winter closure allows bulbs the cold conditions they need; gardeners prepare beds before spring opening. Peak bloom is only a few weeks, and after flowering the garden may remain visitable without the signature display.
Established in 2007 to promote floriculture and tourism, the garden was built into Zabarwan slopes for both cultivation and scenic travel. The annual Tulip Festival celebrates spring with flowers, Kashmiri culture, crafts, and traditions.
