Overview

A sacred hilltop shrine of Dogra land

On a peaceful, forested Billawar hillock, Sukrala Mata Mandir is an important historic Dogra shrine. Dedicated to Sukrala Devi, it is traditionally associated with Mal Devi, regarded as an incarnation of Sharda Devi.

At around 3,500 feet, the temple combines spirituality, local legend, heritage, and Jammu-hill scenery. Visitors climb flights of steps to reach the hilltop sanctum.

History & religious significance

Tradition describes the shrine as the abode of Mal Devi/Sharda Devi, manifested as a Shilla, a stone slab seated on a brass lion with a silver-mounted head. It also contains an image of Mahishasur Mardini associated with Maha Lakshmi.

The temple is traditionally believed to have been built by Madho Singh, an exiled Chamba prince. It remains a key religious and cultural part of Duggar heritage.

One-day plan

Jammu → Kathua → Billawar → Sukrala

Start early, travel through Kathua to Billawar, then continue approximately 9.6 km to Sukrala. Park near the shrine, climb the temple steps, take darshan, and enjoy the surroundings. In the afternoon return to Billawar and visit Mahabilvakeshwar Temple if time allows before travelling back to Jammu.

The final Billawar–Sukrala section rises to the hilltop. Check local road conditions during monsoon or heavy rain.
