Overview
A sacred Shiva shrine in the Chenani hills
In Udhampur's Chenani mountains, Sudh Mahadev is among Jammu & Kashmir's most sacred ancient Shiva temples. Forests, Himalayan scenery, and a peaceful setting make it both a pilgrimage and a scenic escape.
The temple is known for its ancient Shivling, sacred Trishul, mythological importance, and thousands of years of belief. Nearby Gauri Kund is associated with Goddess Parvati's worship. The annual Sudh Mahadev Mela brings thousands for ritual, prayer, and cultural activity.
History & faith
Legend says Parvati worshipped Shiva here and a demon named Sudh disturbed her prayers. Shiva appeared to protect her, and the place became Sudh Mahadev. The sacred Trishul is regarded as a symbol of divine power and faith.
Gauri Kund is sacred to Parvati, while nearby Mantalai is traditionally connected with the marriage of Shiva and Parvati. The temple and annual fair preserve Dogra religious heritage across centuries.
