Overview

A sacred journey through Paddar Valley

Machail Mata Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in the Chenab Valley. The shrine of Shri Chandi Mata is in Machail village, Paddar Valley, Kishtwar district, at approximately 2,900 metres (9,514 feet). Snow-clad peaks, forests, waterfalls, and the pristine Chenab River basin surround a shrine that draws thousands every year.

Dedicated to Goddess Chandi (Durga), the temple is believed to fulfil wishes of devotees who arrive with faith. The annual yatra in Shravan (July–August) is the main event. It offers spiritual blessings, Himalayan scenery, and an adventurous pilgrimage.

History

A living tradition of Maa Chandi

Local tradition says the idol of Maa Chandi was brought to Machail centuries ago by a local devotee. The shrine has since become an important worship centre for the Chenab Valley and surrounding regions.

The annual pilgrimage gained wider recognition through late promoter Sh. Sohan Singh, who encouraged better pilgrim facilities. Today the administration and Shri Machail Mata Yatra Management Committee support a safe, well-managed yatra.
