Overview
Kashmir's Valley of Milk
Doodpathri, in Budgam's Khansahib area, is one of Kashmir's most beautiful lesser-explored valleys. Known as the “Valley of Milk,” it is famed for wide green meadows, crystal-clear streams, pine and deodar forests, and Himalayan views.
At approximately 2,730 metres (8,957 feet), it offers a peaceful alternative to crowded destinations. Snowy peaks, alpine landscapes, and rivers make an ideal setting for nature lovers, photographers, families, and adventurers. The approach through villages, forests, and mountain roads is part of the experience.
History
Local tradition links the name to “Dood” (milk) and “Pathri” (stone). Kashmiri saint Sheikh-ul-Alam Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani is believed to have found a stream here whose water looked white as milk flowing over stones.
Shepherd communities historically used the valley's lush meadows for grazing. Today it is an eco-tourism destination that retains its natural charm and peaceful mountain-community character.
