Overview
North Kashmir's untouched meadow country
Bangus, or Bungus, Valley is a spectacular and lesser-explored high-altitude meadow in Handwara, Kupwara. Vast grasslands, conifer forests, streams, and Himalayan scenery form a raw, peaceful natural landscape.
At around 10,000 feet, it has two principal areas: Bodh Bangus (Big Bangus) and Lokut Bangus (Small Bangus). Alpine terrain, wildflowers, grazing fields, and quiet surroundings make it an offbeat eco-tourism escape beyond Kashmir's more commercial destinations.
History
Bangus has long been valued for forests and seasonal grazing meadows used by local shepherd communities. Its name reflects the character of this meeting of grassland and forest.
Remoteness kept the valley less explored for years. It is now gaining eco-tourism interest while continuing to represent traditional mountain life and Himalayan ecosystems.
