Overview
A sacred journey to the ice Shivling
The Amarnath Yatra leads devotees through Jammu & Kashmir's high Himalayas to Amarnath Cave, where the naturally formed ice Shivling is worshipped. At about 3,888 metres, the cave is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and dramatic Himalayan scenery.
This is not a year-round tourist attraction but a limited summer pilgrimage. It joins faith, adventure, natural beauty, and high-altitude exploration for pilgrims from India and abroad.
Seasonal nature
The Yatra normally operates about 40–50 days in summer, generally June–August, on dates announced officially each year. Winter snow, extreme cold, and unpredictable weather close the cave and routes outside the season.
Before opening, authorities prepare routes, facilities, security, medical care, and rescue support. Pilgrims must register officially and follow that season's guidelines.
History & religious importance
Hindu tradition says Shiva revealed the Amar Katha, the secret of immortality, to Parvati in this cave. The ice Shivling symbolises Lord Shiva. Centuries of pilgrims and the support of agencies, security forces, medical teams, and Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board made it one of India's largest organised pilgrimages.
